The first step toward achieving teen weight loss is to talk with your teenager about his or her weight problem. It is quite likely, your teen already aware of his or her weight problems but does not know of suitable remedies. The emotional damage of being overweight can be greatly upsetting. Let your teen know through your supportive and persuasive approach, you are there to help in all possible ways. Physical activity is one of the best ways to promote teen weight loss. Make it a family affair by beginning to play tennis, baseball, basketball or other outdoor games with your teen. Ideally, your teen should get 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and this can be broken into two or three shorter sessions.

Teen weight loss is an increasingly important issue, as today more and more teens are combating weight problems. But before discussing weight loss tips for teenagers, it is essential that you do not blame anyone including your parents, your friends or anyone else for your present obesity. Never feel guilty or develop an inferiority complex about your appearance as such a negative attitude will hinder your weight loss program.

Never opt for a short term, crash weight loss program that will make it difficult to sustain the weight loss over longer periods of time - but instead follow a change in lifestyle that will help reduce weight over a lifetime. Losing weight too quickly is dangerous for adults, but it is equally unhealthy for teens because their bodies are still growing and changing. A severe diet or a quick weight loss plan can cause long term damage to your teenager's body. Instead the teenager should consume more nutritious food, do regular physical exercise, and reorient his eating habits. Even if he/she falters or errs along the way, there is no need to feel alarmed as there is a long time to make the corrections.

Set realistic goals that can be achieved and not over-ambitious impractical goals. Losing one-half to one pound per week is very realistic and achievable goal. Exercising actually makes you feel more energetic and you will realize it once you have made a habit of it. If you do not feel like you have energy to exercise now, start out with some physical work-out that will keep you active, but will not require much energy. Once you have done some daily walking for a couple of weeks, try running for short distances. Ride your bicycle, or roller blades, or shoot some baskets in the driveway or ask your gym teacher for similar suggestions. Most teachers are thrilled with kids that are self-motivated to improve.

Ask your parents to support you in your weight loss programs. They should be able to help you find materials for low calorie nutritious food items such as fresh fruits for snacks and whole grain cereals for breakfast. And they can avoid purchasing foods that will tempt you like sodas, chips, candy, donuts, cookies or other junk food. But please know that weight loss will not happen unless the desire comes from inside you and you are firmly resolved to lose weight. No amount of external pressure or advice from parents, friends or well-wishers will do the job.
