childhood-obesity

Childhood obesity is a symptom that is characterized by excess weight well above the prescribed limit for their height and age. Doctors define obesity as having a body mass index well above average. There are over 15% of American children considered obese and this percentage is alarmingly on the increase.

Childhood obesity can result from irregular eating habits and over eating. The lunches most children bring to school, many are packed with junk food and snack items instead of a healthy, balanced meal. Eating out on a regular basis also contributes to weight gain in children. Children that eat meals at home with all other family members typically weigh less than children of families who eat out several times a week.

Lack of physical activity is a great factor when it comes to overweight children. If a child sits around watching TV, playing video games and munching, they are more likely to be obese. On the other hand when a child gets at least 30 minutes of exercise each day they will be less likely to be overweight. Do not be afraid to face the truth and take prompt action as disregarding childhood obesity will not only prolong the problem but further aggravate it

Over the past 20 years, overweight and obesity among children has skyrocketed from 8% to 33%. This makes overweight-childwood overweight and obesity the most serious health issue facing our children. Research from top universities shows that overweight children are likely to become more and more overweight, and that 90% of overweight kids will become obese adults. Whether you are just beginning to wonder if that baby fat will ever go away or if you have tried everything else and failed, then a weight loss camp is the answer.

The number of weight loss camps for obese kids are continuously on the increase. This summer, children from all over the nation are expected to flock to weight loss camps in the hope that, when they return home, they will be a little lighter and a little faster on their feet. There are dozens of camps scattered about the country. Most take both boys and girls, and all insist that they provide as much fun as regular camps - apart from rigorous weight loss programs.

In most weight loss camps, traditional activities like hiking, swimming and outdoor activities are augmented with nutrition and cooking classes, as well as a cognitive behavioral therapy program that teach campers successful weight management. Campers learn to record their food intake and amount of exercise, as well as keep a journal about their thoughts and feelings in the process. But at weight-loss camps, obese kids join others who are facing the same problems. This exposure, camp officials say, often leads to the creation of a supportive community.

weightloss-camps In most weight loss camps for obese kids, each day is separated into five scheduled activity periods. Kids are asked to engage in activities that include kayaking, games, aerobics, self-defense classes and talent shows. Campers are served three meals and two snacks daily, receiving a total of 1,200 calories and no more than 120 grams of fat. In addition, campers wear pedometers and must take a minimum of 10,000 steps a day. Not all camps however follow the same regimen - although all of them make sure that the kids are in a safe, homogenous, no threatening environment. it is crucial that kids feel emotionally secure. In other words, no ragging, no teasing and no bullying allowed.

Benefits of weight loss for type 2 diabetes patients

Wednesday, August 13, 2008
The therapeutic benefits gained by loosing weight soon after type 2 diabetes is identified are continued, even if patients the in due course regain weight, according to the results of research took place in Portland, Oregon.

"The main significance is that on average, patients who lose weight following diagnosis have better glycemic and blood pressure control than patients who don't, even if they subsequently regain the lost weight," study co-author Dr. Gregory A. Nichols told Reuters Health. "This is encouraging, because people who lose weight often have trouble keeping the weight off. We're saying that's OK, it's still worthwhile to lose it."

Although losing weight is definitely beneficial in patients with diabetes, last research that found the effects of weight loss did not split intentional from accidental weight loss due to illness or examine patterns of weight change eventually.

Boot camp training tips

Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Please bear in mind that in boot camps, the training is not confined only to physical fitness. You may find it hard to believe - but it is only ten percent physical fitness and ninety percent mental alertness. Attending boot camps is an endurance test. Remember you have no options other than holding on. There are two things during boot camp training - things that you want to do and things that you have to do. Self-discipline is very important and you must understand what you have to do and how to do them. These tips may sound harsh but harsh but that's boot camp training is all about.
If you are a new recruit, your drill instructor will make the rules for you. Never be impatient or attempt to argue with your instructor. There will be too much regimentation and even if you are right you cannot and will not win. You might have heard from others about boot camp training but never give the impression you have prior knowledge about boot camps. Boot camp training is somewhat different for each individual and no matter whatever you know, the fact is you do not know.
It is the responsibility of the drill instructor to do his best to make all the recruits in the camp think and act as a team. There is no place foe ego in the boot camp and your job is only to implicitly obey all instructions. You will have to cease being selfish in order to help the team accomplish a task or a mission. The "WE" factor is far more important than the "I". If you see some of your buddies struggling, assist and motivate them. If you help them they will probably reciprocate when you are in need.
Try to be cautious when volunteering to do certain tasks. You may be rewarded but you will find yourself responsible not only for your performance but for the performance of others next to you. Training is hard and some times you may think that volunteering for a task might help you. It may help but it could bruise your ego and demoralize you as well. It is different if you are picked for a task when things will be different.
Please understand that there is a purpose for everything that happens during boot camp training. Even if a task appears completely stupid or useless, it may not in the end be so. Quite a few things happening in the boot camp may not be logical and therefore do not try to find answers for everything that happens in the boot camp. You need to have a high rank to know the purpose for the things that happen during your training. Remember to stay focused all the time. You are not there to analyze or question the things that go on but to pass the boot camp training. Here are a few tips to survive in the boot camp.
Avoid eye contact. It is difficult for a Drill Instructor to intimidate you if you are looking away. Bear in mind that no matter how traumatic things seem, your stay at Boot Camp is only temporary and you will win back your freedom soon. Never ever attempt to volunteer to do anything as that can prove suicidal. Speak less but keep your eyes and ears open. Doing push-ups (you'll do plenty of these) with your fingers spread and your palms off of the deck is easier than doing them with your fingers together and your palms flat. Never ask the Drill Instructor "why?" - remember it is not your job to question "why/" but only to do and die. Never smile or appear cheerful within sight of a Drill Instructor. You have no right to be happy in boot camp and if a Drill Instructor sees you gleeful he will soon take steps to put you back into gloom.
When you have to say something to a Drill Instructor, make sure you employ very few words. You cannot afford to be voluble before your Drill Instructor. Eat quickly in the mess halls during lunch recess. Drill Instructors will occasionally abruptly terminate the time allotted for dining and you well end up starving. Make damn sure your boots fit. Foot trouble in boot camp can cause serious problems - like not graduating with your platoon.
